I wait for the week when there is no news involving Google. After changing the world (well, almost) by its text, now we hear that Google has patented even voice search. As the Chinese say, "May we live in interesting times."

Read your 30 days (or was it 10 days) with your ipod a couple of years ago. Am glad you still have it. Anyway, meant to talk about ipod alternatives here...I owned a Rio Karma around the same time you wrote that iPod article and I felt so tempted to write one too - but 2 things stopped me
1. The Karma was a bit unreliable (hdd crashes) proved by its death last year
2. It was plain ugly
What did it have going for it?
1. It's the best DAP ever made - the most ergonomic, great navigation (I think the clickwheel, however innovative, is very restrictive for users with a large music collection)
2. GREAT sound - the equalizers actually worked.
Anyway, Apple is seen as the most innovative company around but it's products work because they are cool and they are marketed well. The iPod is as buggy (sudden freezes) as its neighbour but we love its look so much that we don't complain a.k.a Aishwarya Rai with an occassional bad breath ;-)
My point being, the alternatives (to nano or the biggie) are just that..alternatives. There's nothing coming to unseat apple - especially if they manage to bring out virtual clickwheel thingy.
About google, 800 pound gorilla in the making :-)
